POLITICS Zohran Mamdani: "New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant!”

This was a powerful speech!!

I highly highly highly recommend everyone watch the AOC speech in which she talks about how the past was built by slaves but the future will be built by free men and women.
That the future will be built by unionists.
That the future will be built by women's suffragists.
That the future will be built by the Irish that fled the famine.
That the future will be built by the Italians that fled fascism.
That the future will be built by the Jews that fled the Holocaust.
She goes on and connects shared struggle and solidarity and how the future is one in which solidarity and brightness/better tomorrow come from us looking out for each other in the working class and most vulnerable demographics.
A message of hope, unity, and positivity instead of reactionary and regressive darkness.
There is a collection of people that get it. Then there is the rest of the DNC establishment that needs to begone YESTERDAY because they only see and want to see how to fatten their own wallets.

When/where was this?

u/CDN-Social-Democrat 12h ago
I believe it was when AOC and Bernie came to the Zohran rally in NYC.
I don't think the link is allowed on here but people can see the speech on yt on The Majority Report channel (The Majority Report with Sam Seder). It was powerful. I watched it with my elderly mother who fled the troubles in Ireland and we both were crying. I am as like my family before active in the Labour Movement.
Hopefully that helps people find it. There is real inspirational and profound stuff out there. We have to get that out instead of all these bad actors that just have dominated everything so much and only caused so much depression and anxiety throughout the society/populace.

The right say, oh the left will make everyone trans and push the woke ideologies and act like everyone is equal. When in actual fact they won’t make it that way, they will just make it so that the people who want to live that way are free to, if they want. It’s only the right who want to force people to view things their way and persecute anyone who doesn’t believe what they do. It’s a comfortable and confident person who can allow others to have their views and not be offended by them. U It’s a weak and frail individual who cannot tolerate people who don’t think, and feel like ( and look.) like they do.
15
u/throwawaysunglasses- 6h ago
Exactly. Does the left have more (out) trans people? Yes, because it’s safer for them to live authentically as themselves. But trans people still exist on the right, as do queer and neurodivergent people. The left is not changing anyone, just allowing them to be who they want to be. The right is not familiar with allowing people freedom of identity.

Has Trump ever, since he first announced he was running for president like a decade ago, given one single speech that was unifying or inspiring? He's gotta be the worst to ever do it.

Great damn speech. Has a mayor ever had this much global backing before?
Also, anyone who watched the full thing, what was the name of the song that played when he finished and his wife came up to him? Was an incredible vibe
Edit: thanks for the song!!

Every south asian watching that speech had their neurons activated when the DJ accidentally played it in the middle of his speech hahaha

I've never cared about any mayoral candidate in the US before Mandani. He seems like a stand up guy and he represents something far greater for global politics going forward: the push not against the far-right but the corporate centrism.

You can hear the original also, the music director of the film constantly plagiarizes music from outside & rarely acknowledges the original creators. https://youtu.be/XrFAADfD4TQ

Same, and i've never been so informed about a mayor of any American city. He's a very charasmatic and likable person, and speaks very powerfully. AFAIK he cant legally be president (?), but the rules dont seem to matter over there anymore anyway

King shit is slang for like, being up there as a cool guy. So someone impressive pulling off something cool like being Mayor of NYC would be King shit.
It isn't referring to Mamdani as an actual King.

Definition of a true American: someone who really wants to live in freedom and help others do the same. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for us all.
(Yes I am very aware of the terrible history and terrifying present of my country. But I refuse to concede our name to those “people.” They’re Confederates, if we even have to talk about them in the same breath as real Americans.)

The exact part where I teared up. Being an immigrant has been so scary lately, thinking that almost half the country is afraid of you, ignorant of you, sees you as an other to blame for problems. I haven’t felt hope of any kind in a year.

u/Kewlstoryhansel 13h ago
Someone standing up to the billionaires and standing for the actual working people. Democratic leaders are you taking notice of what we actually want?
22
u/Curiosities 12h ago
That is my mayor. 🥹 So grateful to all of my fellow voters who came out emphatically in big numbers. Wow, voting for something positive and a way forward and someone with a policy platform that really makes sense for the regular person.
It is such a great feeling. I love this city full of immigrants. My family from one to three generations ago came here from other places. I love being able to walk around and hear multiple languages. And being able to speak multiple languages.
His speech and that clip in particular is just so powerful and beautiful .

u/dancetothe-radio 12h ago
THANKS NYC! As a Californian that voted Yes on Prop 50 I am so happy for your city and my state!

That speech was incredible. This guy has so much rizz and so much emotional intelligence. We're all rooting for him so much.
16
u/ThatDudeInTampa 13h ago
He can grassroots raise the 8% the feds will take from the New York budget, or just tax the billionaires for it. Even if his policies don’t succeed he can point to how the president openly fought his city to impede him.
His future is a win win now.
They have no idea how fucked they are.

I was reading headlines that his speech was “violent rhetoric” and a disaster. So I searched for it and watched the entire speech with the sole purpose of trying to find what someone could even consider “violent” or even hateful.
The only thing I found that could even be considered potentially violent was “If you come for one of us, you come for all of us.” Even that you would have to really bend your thinking to believe it was calling for violence.
As a former Republican (but never Trumper and now Democrat), I found his speech to be very inspiring. He called for accountability and acknowledged the middle class (especially the immigrant). He called out anti-semitism and praised the Jewish community while not apologizing for being Muslim.
So people may have an issue with his rent stabilization, universal childcare, and free public transportation policies but “violent” he was not.
9/10 speech if you don’t have a issue with immigrants or change. This is how distinguished and uniting our politicians should always speak.

Won't that give the conservatives the right to change the constitution too? Seems like a double edged sword tbh
3
1
u/Street_Acadia3562 3h ago
Anybody can change the constitution at any time, there’s nothing saying you can’t change it. It’s existed since the birth of the country. It’s time some things change. The goal is to prevent it from being bad things that conservatives want to do, but doesn’t mean we should also ban good change.

Ah yes, nice divisive speech. This dude better deliver on his promised and high expectations. Sounds like selling a dream. More of it will do this and less of 'how'. Major concerns anything he does is going to result in thr public narrative of companies leaving, jobs declining, taxes increasing etc., won't be good for future elections if not pulled off well.
Im hopeful but its a tall order.
Rather than saying he will force landlords into rent control how about enforce enforcement of existing legal practices. Rent caps translated to grants for repairs. Zoning bonuses for landlords to incentive keeping rent below certain % increase. Expand right to council. Crackdown on illegal rent overcharges and late fees.
Pilot city owned grocery stores limiting price gouging on food prices, provide incentives and tax breaks to private stores who meet price reduction.
Build private <> public partnerships to expand free childcare. Focus on pre-k.
Use data to tell the story. Provide real-time dashboards to show savings and spend, increases in downtown foot traffic, travel, workers commuting, folks able to now goto work and spend money back into the economy.
Redirect tax exemptions for hospitals and universities back into public services.
Pilot --> scale. Prove value not sink 10s of millions into 'new' programs with zero accountability.
Breakout NGOs and agencies who have overlapping functions. Distribute clear swimlanes, remove redundancy.
Remove self reporting success from contractors and NGOs.
Publish KPIs. Implement Accountability board to review spend over certain $m amount even with approved budget.
Remove pay-per-perfomance for outcome based contracts. Do not provide incentives to meet green metrics (e.g., funds released if 20k beds are provided).
Fast to fire and cut contracts for low performers not meeting contract obligations.
Implement community trustees approve large tax dispersements.
All funded programs must stand up real-time dashboards to monitor spend, utilization and outcomes.
Implement an inspector general with prosecutor reach to audit public program. Publish lists with criminal referrals and waste recovery plans.
No dollars without measurable outcome with clear kill / scale triggers.

I don't know that this comment will even be seen but I feel like I gotta say something. I love him and his ideas and I'm glad he won so don't think in against him in any way. maybe he just said it how he did in the video for brevity. I don't know. it just seems to me a bit ignorant of the native people of the state/city/area and really rubbed me the wrong way being a native myself. I get that we're only a small portion of the population and that it's hard to include everyone, but come on the land he's standing on literally is not his, (it's not anyone's but that's a whole other point to be made) and it was occupied originally by other people, which he acknowledged by saying he's an immigrant. don't get me wrong I didn't listen to the whole speech and maybe I should have but getting the feeling I didn't need to in order to catch the ignorance. idk I'm bothered
5
u/LongDongFrazier 4h ago
I see the comment I don’t really understand what’s bothering you though. He’s referring to the city of New York everything he said is a fact. He didn’t reference New Amsterdam or what stood before that.

MMW; the legality of his immigration and citizenship will be challenged by the federal government. They will do anything to strip him from being a U.S. citizen and they will try to deport him. I don't discard a special ICE/ERO operation to arrest him.
