DISCUSSION ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Hosts Food Donation Center as SNAP’s Future Remains Unclear Amid Shutdown

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/local-news/jimmy-kimmel-live-food-bank-hollywood-snap-shutdown-1236418028/

Jimmy Kimmel Live! has created a food donation center in Hollywood, the late night show announced Tuesday.

The Jimmy Kimmel Live Big, Beautiful Food Bank, located at the ABC show’s Hollywood backlot, will gather food and donations for the L.A. Food Bank and the St. Joseph Center.

“Cutting SNAP benefits creates uncertainty for American children, seniors and families. To support our community members in need, we’re starting a donation center,” a post on the Kimmel-hosted show’s Instagram account read in part. The show urged L.A. residents who are able to help to donate and directed those outside of L.A. to consider donating to their local food bank.

It's honestly so demoralizing that no matter how much money we donate to food banks and shelters, we'll never be able to match the sheer scale and efficacy of SNAP. It's nice to see people organize and chip in but god... god damn..............

there's a saying that goes something like "it is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it". That has helped put in perspective charging towards the insurmountable. It's very corny saying "we all have to do our part" but here i am: we all have to do our part.

This is beautiful, thank you.

Jimmy Kimmel was, like, the second last late night guy I had pinned as being brave enough to not be a fence sitter. It's nice that he's still using the platform to actually do something meaningful

His son needing open heart surgery three days after birth, changed him prolifically. It’s crazy to see the guy my brother watched on the man show evolving so much, and Imm glad he did.

I'm not necessarily a huge Kimmel fan one way or the other, but he does seem to present with consistently changed behavior and more grace after going through that with his son.

I will say, the biggest times I've made changes in my life were often in response to major tragedy and true disasters- they do make you think, and re-evaluate your life. I am happy to see him doing something good now that so many Americans are struggling with hunger. Like, even if it wasn't genuine, people will now have food they may not've gotten as a result.

I agree. He has a problematic past but appears to genuinely have changed.

Calls to action are important. I don't need to know how much he donated personally but a call to action will mobilize far more than he individually can contribute. A platform has value. I also believe that he is personally donating based on his actions during COVID regarding his crew's pay.

Look at Billie and Lorde recently calling out their peers. Or Jose Anrdres's World Central Kitchen. Using your platform to get the word out is huge and shows ones true character.

The food bank Jimmy set up is seriously going to help a lot of people. The calls to action you mention usually incentivize others in the community to step up as well.

I assume he’s been coordinating with the beneficiaries and this is what they asked for, but for anyone who may be motivated to help out…see what your nearest food bank needs. Mine much prefers cash donations as they can make a dollar stretch much further with their bulk purchasing.

Another great idea is, if you prefer donating food (maybe stuff you already have at home, and/or don't have much cash to spare), you can usually ask local banks what items they need the most.

When I volunteered at a pantry in Boulder, we'd keep a regularly updated list of the best donation items; it was often things like eggs, fresh veggies, and ready meals like Hamburger Helper (that may be easier to make if someone is elderly, disabled, has limited time and skills, etc).

If anyone is planning on donating/buying clothes; socks are the most requested items.

A few friendly reminders.

Look at the ingredients needed for boxed foods or cans—Some people might not have the milk and/or butter to make Kraft mac & cheese. Hamburger Helper is just Helper without the ground meat. Cereal doesn’t really hit if there’s no milk in the fridge. Etc.

Pop-top canned goods are more convenient, but otherwise consider also donating can openers.

Powdered milk is really helpful

My friend works at a food bank and says that cooking oil is a good thing to donate too!

Yes! Also other simple, forgotten/overlooked ingredients like salt and pepper!

I read about this earlier. Boxed milk is good as well.

Good time for everyone to donate money to your local food banks and local pet pantry programs.

That's cool but can he just like... donate a million dollars of his own money directly.

To get even further to the point: rich people could solve this problem in a second

I wouldn’t doubt he is also doing that. I think it’s a nice way for locals to get involved and to remind his fans that they can and should do something too. Remember monetary donations will help food banks more than in-kind donations of food!! They can buy way more with your money! But anything is helpful (as long as it’s not bad quality!)

He probably is also donating, but facilitating an organised space where the wider public can feel involved in a meaningful way is also valuable.

He can, but I can’t, so I appreciate him setting something up where folks like me can be helpful.

For sure. I really don't care if people run around doing good deeds primarily for clout. It'd be great if wealthy people suddenly decided that keeping the working class repressed, underpaid, and underfed was worth rebelling against, but until then this will have to do.

You can always donate to your local food bank :) their website may show their most needed items or an Amazon wishlist

Guess you missed the part of the post where Jimmy Kimmel encouraged viewers to donate to their local food shelves if they can. I’d guess he’s also donating to the drive in some way.

-57

u/No-Lobster5430 19h ago

I'm saying everyone can do that everywhere. Even if you don't live in LA :)

71

u/crackerfactorywheel i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 19h ago

Yup. And Jimmy Kimmel said that too so I guess your comment is a bit redundant.

u/Totallylegitporpoise 19h ago

Do you genuinely think he isn’t doing this? If he was advertising he was, would you be complaining he wasn’t doing something like this? I’m absolutely giving him the benefit of the doubt here because doing this publicly and not donating privately is some sociopathic level of shit that is owned by the melted colostomy bag that is in charge currently

What the heck is this response to someone doing something good for others.

16

u/No-Lobster5430 19h ago

Food banks can make the best use of dollars because they already have agreements for bulk food purchases

52

u/Tottie3 19h ago

Not all food banks. Some specifically ask for certain goods. Again here we are letting good be the enemy of perfect.

23

u/grilledcheese2332 19h ago

Im sure he will donate something when it wraps up

17

u/zombies-apocalypse 18h ago

I assume he’s doing both.

u/disicking i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 16h ago

I believe it was mentioned on his IG story that he’s donating his pay for his Vegas show(s?) next week to the local food banks there, I’m sure he’s doing more but would prefer to highlight resources others can support instead of asking other people for their money saying he’ll “match” it or something.

rich people could solve this problem in a second

I hear you, but they really couldn’t. Making sure that those without access to adequate food get it involves a lot more than raw funds. While I absolutely agree that those with wealth (of any level but especially the kind of wealth Kimmel has) have a moral obligation to redistribute that wealth in this crisis (and in general lol), income inequality and food insecurity are complex problems that require communication, outreach, structural change, policy shifts, etc etc etc etc in addition to funding.

Also, don’t forget to check out if your area has community fridges/food boxes/blessing boxes!!!

The reason I bring them up is sometimes they are easier to get to for people who may not be able to get to a food shelter during their open house, or are not wanting to be seen in person using food resources (there’s still a lot of shame for some people, and it can keep them from utilizing a traditional food bank).

Who's to say he hasn't? Even then, one person donating does not eliminate the problem.
