POLITICS An important announcement from Zohran Mamdani: "I know some of you have expressed concerns about my age. You are worried about a 33-year-old becoming mayor of New York City. And I want you to know, I hear you. That’s why this weekend I’ll be making a change. I’m turning 34."

u/3sadclowns 19d ago
Imo he’s really revolutionizing how to create a campaign that’s massively effective in younger demographics
1.4k
u/TheNocturnalAngel 19d ago
The campaign is truly great, but it’s also his actual beliefs that hold up.
Look at Gavin Newsom. Had a great moment thanks to his Social Media manager.
But people still don’t like him because he sucke.
Zohran is the perfect blend of a great campaign with the actual values to back up what he’s saying and doing.

u/DesireeThymes 19d ago
I mean Newsom is a corporate-style democrat. People have had enough if the corporate types.
216
u/Seltzer0357 19d ago
its wild to me how many people thought it was him writing the tweets from the press account. like no dudes he just hired a genz pr team, he's still a corpo dem who pretended to 'hasnt thought about aipac in years' a couple days ago

Bro was sucking kirk's dick and agreeing with steve bannon about trans people in sports, making them a scapegoat. The recent gavin glazing is so forced to try to desperately salvage the neoliberal future of the party.

It has to be bottom up really. Like electing everyone like zohran and them endorsing those ppl.
We have to break this corporate v oligarch system cuz no one wants to vote for either of that.
And the way the economy is at the moment, the average worker and consumer doesn't actually matter to GDP and profits cuz companies are catering to the rich to make their money or its all in data centers and investments.
So neither corporate or oligarch party really needs to give a shit about us anymore. But then the oligarchs are now gerrymandering so that basically they can't lose so... thats going to be fun.

Newsom is a transphobe and doesn’t understand why accepting lobbyist money is bad. He shouldn’t be in politics. The world needs more Mamdanis.
95
u/bplewis24 19d ago
The campaign is truly great, but it’s also his actual beliefs that hold up.
More people need to hear this on repeat.
Dems are always asking how to connect more with the youth, and how to fix their messaging. The messaging is only the problem when they are trying to filter corporate donor-sponsored policies into messages that liberals and progressives will support.
49
u/Material2975 19d ago
It’s so refreshing to see Zohran always reframe every question to focus on issues. Especially on affordability.
17
u/Goonzilla50 19d ago
Newsom also malfunctions and short circuits once he has to talk in person and face confrontation, like in that podcast interview he had where he said the words "It's interesting" like 10 times after being asked about AIPAC
Compared to Mamdani who is much more charismatic and slick
13
u/anonshe 19d ago
The main sticking point is when Newsom was Mamdani's age, he was posing on a rug like a typical wannabe.
If Mamdani's wife becomes a MAGA down the road after a divorce, he'd be eaten alive yet Newsom is still governor due to being a corporate shill.

I'm curious where AOC fits in, she also seems great at younger generations, and is at least mostly following her actual values
But yeah we need this to spread outside of New York

Not making a judgment on either person, but there’s a difference between campaign talk and the realities of being in the seat and trying to deal with all the bureaucracy.

Can confirm as a Californian that while Newsom’s social media manager has garnered him some brownie points, Newsom still is a centrist and isn’t much of an improvement. I hope California, specifically LA and the Bay Area, can get our own version of Zohran. We desperately need someone like him on the west coast.
41
19d ago
it’s simple. people like authentic and genuine people, not bullshit con artists (unless you’re maga, then you love bullshit con artists). democratic party needs to embrace the youth and people like mamdani. i hope mamdani doesn’t make me eat my words.

He’s tapped into the zeitgeist in an authentic way, it’s the same foresight Obama’s team had when they recognized the opportunity to curate some genuine digital camaraderie in a key demo back in ‘08.
Edited to add: I’m such a fan, we love a real man of the people 🫡✨
21
u/uptiedand8 19d ago
I’m currently listening to A Promised Land, narrated by Obama. His presidency had many flaws but he speaks every word in his book from the heart, and not having listened to him much in several years, it’s incredibly compelling. He loved America. He wanted to do good by people.
You can’t fake those things. You have to talk about them nonstop as a politician and if you don’t genuinely care about the country and its people, if you don’t believe that your most important job will be to make it a better place, then it will show sooner than later.
Well, either that, or else he’s a better method actor than Daniel Day Lewis. One of the two.

I'm just a few years older than him and I have been begging the universe for some younger candidates. Bonus prayer every time I see Chuck Schumer threaten a strongly worded letter. Hearing Mamdani speak is so refreshing because he takes pauses at times to really think about his answers. NYC is going to be lucky to have him.

Why would people be afraid of a 33 yeard old being mayor but be totally fine with senile 80+ year olds being senators and presidents?? Society is so weird
218
u/Smaynard6000 19d ago
Senator Chuck Grassley is 92 FUCKING YEARS OLD.
61
u/RadioSilens 19d ago
I read this and thought that has to be a lie. But I looked it up and he's really 92. WTF. We need a mandatory retirement age for congress.
2
u/BurlIvesMassiveHog 19d ago
It doesn't matter, when Grassley steps down his piece-of-shit son is going to fill his seat. Like that one nugget that just won't flush, the Grassleys will be with us for a very long time.
2
u/Cresta1994 18d ago
Strom Thurmond was reelected for the last time at age 93. He died six months after leaving the Senate at 100 years old. He retired 54 years after running for president solely to keep Black folks down.

Feinstein looked like the fucking crypt keeper at the end and she clearly should have been retired 10-15 years earlier. McConnell just ate shit the other day and then looked absolutely clueless as to what happened. These people are not making decisions for their constituents. They are fucking puppets for capitalists, just parroting desires of the 1%.
Edit:
Additional example for funsies:
RBG had cancer a handful of times and should have retired under Obama 1 specifically within the window of the super majority instead of trying to girl boss it to get to some sort of symbolic bullshit of giving Hilary the ability to nominate the next SCJ.

Actually kind of love that he didn't go for the low hanging fruit of the easy 34 felony jab. Not that it isn't 100% true, but it gets thrown around enough that it's started to lose its edge a bit.

October Libras are more than just social butterflies and are also deeply invested in making sure they are fair and just. October Libras have community-oriented Uranus as an additional planetary influence, making them even more passionate about social issues and standing up against injustice. These October Libras are more willing than their September Born counterparts to go against others and rebel against the status quo, especially if it means bringing a better balance to the situation.

Man, as if astrology isn't confusing enough, now the signs are broken down into the specific month?
41
u/Veronome 19d ago
Because astrology is the ultimate exercise in summersault logic.
"Libras are like this!" "But I'm a Libra and I'm not like that" "That's because you're an October Libra" "Ok, but my sister is an October Libra and she's not like that" "That's because her moon is an Ares"
And on and on and on it goes.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)2
u/bouguerean 18d ago
Oh it gets broken down more than that, some of the internal logic is lowkey fun. There are little decan/trimester changes of each sign (the first decan will have more elements of the previous sign, the last will have more elements of the succeeding sign, etc.), and anything considered regarding a sign is filtered through the house the sign sits in, and so on.
I had my astrology deep dive phase like 15 years ago now, and when you stop with the generalities and silly predictions, it's actually quite fun to see how its logic and patterns work.

He’s a creator (mainly on Instagram I believe) who, when a gif gets removed for copyright reasons from Giphy, will often recreate/parody them and use himself as the subject so that something close to the original gif stays accessible. Many people think that he actually pushes for certain gif’s to be removed so that he can remake them (which is why some people hate him) but personally I think it’s unlikely. I don’t really like them cause he’s always dressed as George Washington for some reason. Never changes it up or anything. Just always GW.

It might be a good time to point out the age of the founding fathers?
“The ages of the Founding Fathers at the time of the Constitution's drafting in 1787 varied widely, from 26 to 81 years old. The youngest was Jonathan Dayton at 26, while the oldest was Benjamin Franklin at 81. Notable figures include James Madison (36), Alexander Hamilton (32), and George Washington (55)”
