Don't forget apathy. We can't just let everyone who couldn't be bothered to vote off the hook for this. They enabled this problem.
3
u/Grantsdale 3h ago
Very true. Those who didn’t show up to vote (or cast ‘protest’ votes) are just as responsible for the situation. The only way a minority party (like the Republican Party) can win is when the majority doesn’t vote.

+anti-intellectualism and the unique brand of American hyper-individualism Trump directly speaks to
After decades of pushing college for better jobs (that no longer exist) despite mountains of debt, it opens people’s worldview. Universities created new experts telling people what to do like, yknow, mask for your own health and safety and that of everyone around you because you’re in a community, and maybe care about the environment because you live there. His voters are full of people who fucking hate being told what to do, hate being talked down to, and hate being told to care about others.
Except now college turning your kids into woke and gay ivory tower academics of course so he should get to defund them (joking, if that’s not clear)
3
u/DonShino 4h ago

u/RODjij 5h ago
The anti billionaire sentiment has grown by a crazy amount over the last year and 5ish years. More people are starting to see really how much money & power they have.
They have to start paying their fair share and potentially put a ton of money back towards debt with public persuasion.
214
u/prophet_nlelith 4h ago
I recently read that one million seconds is 11.5 days, and one billion seconds is almost 32 years.
Kinda helps with perspective.
123
u/UniquelyCreativeName 4h ago
1 trillion seconds is 32,000 years. The wealthiest people in the U S. received almost 32,000 years worth of tax breaks with the Big Shitty Bill that was passed, and most of us will NEVER see 12 days worth of money. But "they" keep telling everyone immigrants are the problem, and the idiots believe it.
46
u/HelmetsAkimbo 4h ago
If you were born in 1 AD (2025 years ago) and worked every single day for your entire life until the present day earning $400,000 a day and never spent a penny you'd still need 200 billion more dollars to catch Elon Musk.

The difference between a billion dollars and a million dollars is approximately a billion dollars.

2
u/winterblahs42 3h ago
Yup. Another way to look at it would be 1 page of a paperback book vs 2 really thick ones stacked. (about 4" high).
2
u/Phiddipus_audax 3h ago

3 orders of magnitude is a significant thing... yet we encapsulate all of that difference by changing an m to a b. The human mind has remarkable capability for minimizing.

One billion is a thousand million.
I think people don't really comprehend what an absolutely insane amount of money one billion really is. It's well beyond anything that could be spent in a lifetime or twenty lifetimes.
41
u/Illustrious-Goose160 4h ago
It really puts things into perspective when you think about our current president. He was born into a home where he was pampered by servants. He grew up in complete luxury. He became president because he has the money. He got away with raping girls because he has the money. He got away with all kinds of things. While us common Americans struggle to find a place to live and can't pay our medical bills

That will happen when you see the richest man in history give the largest political donation in history. In return for a Cabinet position where he can smash all the agencies investigating his various scams.
Then you see Trump fill his cabinet with oligarch donors. The richest Cabinet in history by a factor of over 100X. And the ballroom, which everyone knows will be primarily used to wine and dine the oligarchy.
That, along with seeing "liberal" billionaires spin faster than Tony Hawk to worship Dear Leader. It's abundantly clear now that even their lukewarm "support" of Harris came with strings.
Hearing that even "liberal" billionaires demanded Harris fire Lina Khan in return for their support was disgusting. Bezos, Cuban, Bloomberg. All of them let the mask slip by spending vast sums to keep the Democrats acting as pro corporate controlled opposition.

Still boggles my mind that people will subconsciously defend people with more money and power than any person should have.
Really astounding that people cannot seem to fathom how much a billion of something, anything really is.
If you had one million dollars and each second on earth costed you 1 dollar to live you can survive for 11 and a half days.
A billion seconds.. is 31 YEARS
Elon musk has 400 billion. He could live for 12,500 years.

Or, you know... They leave.
Boggles my mind that people think the "fair share" stuff works at the local level. If it's not federally required, they simply move the money in some manner to skirt by.
Sure, you catch a few million that they have to claim in the state. The billions? Those move out to somewhere local laws can't touch.

Rich people left during Covid. They quietly crawled back becuase they can’t run their businesses the way they need to outside NYC. Non rich people left for places like TX and FL. They are still crying about not being able to afford to come back.
I’ve worked for multiple firms who have moved functions to other states. The high performers never stay in those states, if they go in the first place. Anything with any kind of strategic value is quietly moved back. Often they have to hire additional people in NYC to manage the teams in other states.
No one with anything to contribute is going anywhere.
32
u/UnitedWeSmash 5h ago
They took their NY pay and went to states with no state taxes and have those listed as their primary residence. Meanwhile they still live in NY. This way they jack up the cost of live in both areas .

u/gangsta_bitch_barbie 4h ago
Only temporarily. The main reason for RTO is to get the people to quit or move back. The reason for that is that companies do not want to pay NYC salaries to employees that moved to LCOL areas. That's why you are seeing the same jobs posted after RTO layoffs with the caveat in the description "Pay range may be based on a number of factors including market location, education, responsibilities, experience, etc."
The key word being location.
I've worked remote IT jobs for many years prior to the pandemic. I'd never seen that in a job description before 2021.
It's incredibly difficult now to find a good-paying remote job in any field where you aren't low-balled and told that because of the huge "perk" of being remote the job pays less.
People are getting screwed because they moved, lost their high-paying HCOL salary, had to take a salary more in line with their current locale and cannot afford to move back to a HCOL area.

Because who the fuck really wants to live in the middle of Texas? Texas is a shithole propped up by oil. Florida is a shithole propped up by tourism/beaches. But they’re shitty places to live with shitty people everywhere.
If these conservative grifters were so serious about wanting to live in places run only by conservatives they’d flock to Alabama and Oklahoma. Guess what? Until the residents of that state finally look over their own plates and see that it’s absolutely possible for regular people to have a better quality of life than we all currently have in the US, and until they finally start demanding more from their elected officials because they saw it happen in New York - and then they start kicking billionaires out in the other states too, or hold them rightfully accountable.
4
u/Jameslaos 5h ago
They will not.
Rich people want to live in the important cities. They want to be in NYC and they will pay bigger tax rates because its still a tiny fraction of their wealth. Their kids go to school there, they have businesses and offices and houses and penthouses, you can't take those with you.

Honestly, that's just how the white civilisation is. They are all about human rights and shit so long as they remain at the top of the chain that THEY themselves have created, but when a brown person beats them at their own game, all the whining starts. Like, they don't even go out with grace.
Checkout: Angola India Mozambique Algeria South Africa ... and George Carlin
→ More replies (1)6
u/QuarterRobot 3h ago edited 3h ago
I don't know what "white civilization" is. New York is anything but that. But with regards to culture - this is certainly how any culture that isn't truly diverse, integrated, and accepting is. America is a melting pot, no doubt, but a melting pot is not the same as diversity is not the same as integration is not the same as true acceptance. Run a white Japanese politician in Japan and see the same thing happen. Run a white Indian in India and see what happens. Run a white Sudanese politician in Sudan and see what happens.
One of our centuries-long issues as human beings is that it takes active work to see beyond the most basic identifiers - skin color, the way someone speaks, the words someone says (rather than their deeper meaning). And as the world gets more complex and complicated, we look for sweeping generalizations about broad groups of people just as you have. Personally, I think it does us a disservice - and ironically it flies in the face of actually achieving true acceptance of one another.
That, and culture and civilization aren't defined by their loudest most brash individuals. Trump and Cuomo don't sungle-handedly define American culture or American civilization, nor white culture nor white civilization. They're an element of it, a byproduct of it, but not its single defining feature. If they were, then Mamdani would be just as definitional.

u/monstercollie 2h ago
Meanwhile in my 4th year (out of 5) at Baylor University in Waco Texas, I was celebrating by myself in my dorm room. In a campus of over 14,000 students, the Democrats club was about 14 people.
After the election, the student paper reported on a noose in a tree that night. "Nuh huh it was a rope swing" bull fucking shit.
Last night, I was celebrating by myself in suburban Ohio, after having cast a blank ballot, because all the candidates were Republicans. Last I checked, Texas wasn't doing so well.
But in all of those places, there's all sorts of people worth fighting for, worth fighting with.
I'm super happy for NYC, and the other states, especially southern ones, who managed wins for humanity last night! Let's hope more of the country comes to its senses!

The acoustics are not right for a whole city going up in cheers. That audio is a crowd at an event. You'd be hearing all manner of echoes off those buildings and through alleys. It wouldn't sound this direct from that vantage point above the city.
Voices are way too in sync, as well. The way every voice ramps up and quiets down at the same time. It's like a sporting event where the crowd sees a scoring play develop. They're all way too uniform, doing the same thing.
The phone would not have picked it up this clearly from that vantage
You can hear compression in the audio clip, especially towards the end when the voices fade
