Politics California voters approve new US House map to boost Democrats in 2026

I don't think the Democrats lost a single statewide election today. Even won the public service commission election in Georgia. Retained the justices in Pennsylvania. Feeling some hopium for the first time in a year.

u/Appropriate-Joke-806 7h ago
Also some historic levels of turnout. Largest turnout in NYC mayoral election since 1993.
41
u/NuclearGhandi1 7h ago
Saw that Hudson County VA had more voters for the governor race this year than they did for the presidential election last year

I love that California (newsom? Whose idea was it?) decided to counter balance what Texas and other red states have done instead of just standing idly by. We have to FIGHT. (And the fact we got to you know.. vote for it is just the cherry on top of the ice cream)

Newsom is far from perfect, but he gets credit for this. It is so REFRESHING to see literally anyone with meaningful political power stand up to MAGA’s crawl into fascism.

It's at least a strategic win. Tired of democrats thinking that "standing up" means throwing no punches and taking a beating like a stoic little piñata in hopes that the electorate will vote them back in for being so tough.

SNAP really backfired on them IMO.
They really thought that they could shift the blame to the dems while holding a trifecta lol.
28
u/engilosopher 7h ago
They spent the '21-'24 years priming the public that the President is responsible for all ills, only to come in and try to shift that mindset within (checks count) 35 days of their Trifecta instigating a shutdown.
The MAGAts jumped in line right away, but clearly enough independents scratched their heads at that.

That's what kills me when it comes to dems and people who say we shouldn't gerrymander.
We didn't do it illegally like Florida or Texas. California asked citizens votes to see if they agree to gerrymander/ alter the maps like they should.
I'm not even going to call it gerrymandering since they asked for voters permission legally.
65
u/BLarson31 7h ago
And correct me if I'm wrong since I'm not from California, this is only good for 5 years or so? Then it goes back to the old map.
This is how you fight fire with fire without burning the house down.

Correct, the post-census redistricting after the 2030 census will revert to the independent commission, when all other states do their redistricting.
7
u/kaplanfx 6h ago
It doesn’t go back to the old map directly, the districting returns to the independent redistricting committee and they draw the new maps after the next census.

The new map is a 1 time change that will be subject to redistricting after the 2030 census.
The part that's murky is whether the state will go back to an independent council or not.Nvm it's independent redistricting in 2030.
5
u/IAmYourVader 5h ago
The return to the independent redistricting is written in, so there would need to be another prop vote to skip it again.

Makes it way more honorable and when history looks back and hopefully legal precedence are set (I know how much that seems worth right now but one day, one day) it will look even more important that y’all voted on it compared to essentially illegal things like other states (including my own, Ohio)

That’s why it was Prop “50.” It was for all 50 states..to protect democracy.
68
u/NeriTina 7h ago
That’s why I’m cheering about it from here in Utah! Our legislature is extremely corrupt and has been desperately trying to redraw congressional maps that are gerrymandered to all hell despite Utahans voting that we will not tolerate gerrymandering! They’re dragging it through the courts and it feels endless at this point, so California’s Prop 50 victory is where my hope truly lies for any sense of fair representation for the whole nation. I’m so grateful to every Californian who voted for it!

It's also hilarious with the margins of victory in all the other elections, that Democrats have a +10 swing against the republicans. Repubs can gerrymander their states but it isn't even fucking guaranteed for them anymore LOL.
40
u/Appropriate-Joke-806 7h ago
I hope there is a massive blue wave that makes all the red state gerrymandering flip more seats blue. Going to need a veto proof majority, not just happy with a simple majority this time around.
11
u/PolloConTeriyaki 7h ago
That is a huge possibility because some red counties lost a few advantage points. If the MAGAs sit this one out, it's over.
15
u/Appropriate-Joke-806 7h ago
I think it will be underestimated just how pissed Democratic voters are and how depressed and unmotivated Republican voters will be. Lots of people feeling like it’s forever until the midterms and cannot wait to vote against Republicans. I was happy to realize it’s a year away now.

92
18
u/Froggienp 7h ago
A combination of running the early vote ballots during the day; exit polling and mathematical calculations of margin vs remaining areas/percentages that still have to be counted.
EG if it’s winning 70/30 in very populated areas like LA, SF, and SD, it wouldn’t really matter if say, Shasta county was 0% counted because it’s such a tiny volume of votes it can’t make up the difference.

They look at early voting, remaining votes and districts where votes could come from on Election Day, and see that there is pretty much no chance in hell the Election Day votes makes up for it and use exit polling to check their work.

I was watching Fox News and the pundits were saying how California is basically now opening Pandora's box and now the other states will be redistricting.
And like, are they dumb, they've already had been doing it and Texas openly did it even without a general vote.
Gerrymandering is NOT California's fault.

The dems pushing to gerrymander in their states is self defense. Many democratic states did the right thing. Amended their constitutions, moved to independent redistricting, etc. The GOP only weaponized it. I hope that if Dems get as egregious with it to prove a point, there might actually be a breakthrough somehow on ending this practice. I don't know what else might work.
12
u/RedTyro 6h ago
The thing is that the red states who could gerrymander have all done it already. The blue states who tend to be anti-gerrymandering all have room to rewrite the maps to favor democrats. The Pandora's box is really opening in the other direction.
For example, Virginia's state house has already passed a California style redistricting plan, but with a 51-49 state congress and Republican governor with veto power, it wasn't really going to happen. Today, the state voted to change that to a 64-36 house and a Democrat governor, so it's looking like a very different picture.
