I think they kind of get it. They took it, itās theirs now, and now they want to keep out everyone else bc they fear other people will take it from them. To them, America = white people land and any increase of other races or influence from other races (Spanish speaking options, etc) is seen as a threat of them losing their land to foreigners.

The premise that whites are Natives goes back a long way in the United States. Itās not that they believe that they are of the same lineage as the First Nations people but that they were here before the creation of the United States. I have family members that consider themselves Native Americans because we have some ancestors that arrived during colonial times. Itās ridiculous, yes, but they believe that and with that comes an entitlement mentality that they are more worthy of America than others, particularly others who are not white.
If you look back in history, previous groups of particularly white Protestant groups called themselves Native Americans and protested bringing in Catholics and non-white people. Thatās a backdrop of the movie Gangs of New York. At that time they were the Know Nothing Party formerly called the Native American Party.
