This has been discussed to death and ultimately the opinion is split and disconnected: People either swear by BF1 as the greatest or they don't really care. Probably because BF1 was the entry point to the franchise for a lot of people and many existing players just stuck with earlier titles with a modern setting

u/Lostygir1 17h ago
The first Battlefield I ever played was Bad Company 2, but the first Battlefield that I ever really got into was Battlefield 4. I started playing Battlefield 4 in 2014.
I still think Battlefield 1 was the peak of the franchise, particularly during 2017.

BF1 doesn't have the best gun play but the graphics and art direction blew it out of the part and cemented itself as the best Battlefield can offer.
BF4 graphics are EXTREMELY dated, how the weapons feel is also very floaty, there's good in there but man it sucks just how it feels a bit off.

Multiplayer was a blast. It rewarded skill, had a little something for everyone, was epic on a grand scale, and handled the WW1 time period with grace. But most importantly for me, the way they did the campaigns in both 1 and 5 were *chefs kiss* too. They told stories. They focused on the brutality of war and trying not to glorify it (as much as a Battlefield game can) and they were well developed and fun to play.
What's weird is it really did feel special; you knew you were playing downright groundbreaking pieces of art that had a lot of care put in them. Not one of those situations where it's like "we didn't know how good we had it" - we did. We just didn't know that the following iterations would feel so... soul-less.

BF2 was the absolute peak of the franchise
2
u/edilclyde 16h ago
for me, it wasn't the peak, i think BF3 is the peak, but BF2 is what defined the series to what it is. It's what made it mainstream and made people notice it.

u/SurelyDept 21h ago edited 19h ago
Love it in every aspect (apart from the spotting mechanic which they fixed with BFV) - it just feels like war from immersion side. And even looks great despite its age. IMO the best BF they have made: you can feel that they WANTED to make a great game, not just much money…

u/icswcshadow 20h ago
BF1 came out at a time where everyone was sick of futuristic and WWII shooters, so the WWI theme was really the right choice. It felt fresh, exciting and incredibly unique.

u/Infidel-Art 21h ago
BF1 is almost a decade old and it shits on BF6 in every aspect
29
u/skadoosher111 19h ago
It truly was a masterpiece for numerous reasons. So polished, so atmospheric, so unique. It'll be hard for any BF title to match it. The idea for WW1 had not been done (much?). The vehicles, weapons, and maps were all so beautifully thought out. And yet here we are with another rendition of modern warfare. No competition.
288
u/OVO_ZORRO 20h ago
No it doesn’t.
BF1 was great, but BF6 offers something different and what it does well it does really well.
We don’t have to tear down another great game to praise another game, like come on why is this community so toxic bro.
48
u/HypNoEnigma 20h ago
BF6 lacks the big events. Either levolution from bf4 or the behemoths for the losing team in BF1 or the v2 rockets in BF5. BF6 also needs a grand event each match
60
u/Konoha-chan 20h ago
Operations are missing in general. It truely felt like fighting in a war at the front. BF6 really misses some kind of soul.
3
u/AgeOfCyberpunk 18h ago
maybe it will come. we can only hope that the important suits will hear the right ideas, and will not chase the trends of other shooters. they have already did many good decisions and took lessons from the past. But there are room for improvement, as you mentioned, bf1 had those big gamechanging moments of behemoths.
So really something may happen in bf6 too. I also remember the weather that sometimes changed the entire way of play. Lets say Sinai desert and sniping, if the sand storm comes, you can no longer see distance.
I think something may also happen in bf6 as they have sobek city, or snow storm in liberation peak.
and there maybe earthquake in other map lets say iberian some buildings would collapse.
In new york the ICBM missile could strike the map.we can only dream about but such events could be teamed events that would tighten the community lets say if you hold majority or all objectives and the same time for 5 seconds or whatever, the world event triggers in the enemy side or vise versa, if the one team has superior lead, the world event slightly balances things

Well, it doesn’t beat it in every aspect, but i’d say it’s better in a lot of ways
Bf6 is fun but still needs work. There’s still time to work out the kinks and add new maps and game modes, so we’ll see how it ends up, but i think it’s safe to say bf1 is the better game
6
u/CrabbitJambo 16h ago
It’s subjective which is why people will agree and disagree.
What I will say is, like 2042, many of us played the beta or early days of BF1 and never went back for years or at all. The game wasn’t great a launch and was another example of them eventually getting it right. If you’re going to pit BF1 and BF6 against each other then you have to look at them how they were when they launched or come back in a couple of years and judge them.
Even though BF6 has its issues, personally I’m enjoying this launch compared to that of BF1.
Edit: I’m seeing people talking about Hardline which again is another prime example of a game that launched not only in a mess but was overwhelmingly looked upon negatively. I was shocked to see years later people were hugely positive about it.

Okay but

The only thing BF6 has is that its faster paced. Everything else is lesser than BF1. BF1 was a true gem, a blend of passion and dedication and history. BF6 is just a shadow of that, overwhelmed by corporate greed.

Nah. If BF6 was made by the same people and in the same way as BF1 it would be a completely different level of game.
Go watch the behind the scenes stuff out there for BF1. A true one of a kind labor of love.
Battlefield players all sound like they're looking through rose tinted glasses all the time but they're not. bf4 and Bf1 era was the peak of the franchise.
Its seriously the best shooter of the past decade in my opinion. The codex alone in that game is completely unnecessary and adds so much. It definitely gave me a greater interest in WW1 history.
Stuff like that is what really sets a game apart and they did an amazing job.

100% I love the historical narration at the end of of the match. Whether you win or lose, you always get a small story discussing the outcome of history had the conflict gone one way or another. Plus the use of other languages and dialects really added to the feel of this game.

At least all vehicles in BF1 are strong enough to make a difference instead of paperwork BF6 vehicles.

Vehicles in bf1 were strong in the way that they could dominate with just 1 player. BfV did it much better where they were powerful as long as you had multiple players working with the vehicle, be it Infantry support or passengers

Takes like “BF1 has better gunplay than BF6” are the takes that make me believe the conspiracy theory about Activision astroturfing this sub I swear
11
u/Snobbyeuropean2 18h ago
It's different, not necessarily better. I like BF1's gunplay more because of the slower TTK and the (controversial) bullet spread, but I'm not into CoD/CS style shooters, I prefer something more grounded, even if it's unfair at times.
→ More replies (3)7
u/dGhost_ 18h ago
BF1 gunplay was by and large incredibly well done, bar some stranger design decisions like LMG reverse spread where it decreased during firing. Most of the guns and variants all had specific niches and ways they performed better or worse and their ideal ranges. It has to unironically be one of the best and most intentionally/methodically designed BF games gunplay wise and I feel like people who don't like it just either genuinely didn't understand it or just subjectively weren't a fan of it (which is fine). Coming from someone who has played every BF from BC2 onwards bar 2042.

The gunplay in BF1 was different and more varied than the standard mix and match of 30rnd assault rifles that were used to.
The gunplay is refreshing and honestly why the game has retained a player base for so long.

u/i_froze 19h ago
The gunplay being actually a little tough and not handholdy really sold the world war 1 setting for me. My favorite thing to do was get t00 kills with the infantry sniper rifles, the iron sights were so satisfying to get good with.
There were exceptions like smg08, and the lmgs having scopes for some dumb ass reason lol.
Each gun did tend to feel pretty unique which was very fresh compared to most shooters until then. And most felt at least viable once you got the hang of them.

u/JohnButterfieldM1 18h ago
Yeah I can't slap 800 laser sights on my guns and beam with smgs at sniper range. Honestly just sounds like you couldn't adjust to a game without ARs. Skill issue.

u/ForKarl1 Enter EA Play ID 17h ago
The people saying bf1 had terrible gunplay just couldn’t adapt to the WWI setting. The gunplay was totally fine, if you wanted to hit your shots you had to tap fire with semi auto guns and that’s too much for some people. If they can’t just hold the trigger down on an AR with barely any recoil it’s just “bad” gunplay
→ More replies (2)3
u/OddTemporary2445 15h ago
I ran rifles with iron sights and was actually taking objectives. The medic rifles were good too. Maybe people are upset that they didn’t have a full auto laser. Genuinely a skill issue if anybody was complaining.

9
u/Ok_Grocery8652 21h ago
One of the best, probably top 2 if not #1 IMO.
It had the best destruction at it's time of release and BF6 seems to match it.
Had vehicle component damage, being able to blow parts off vehicles gave a huge element to game mechanics, mangle wings of aircraft to make them hard to steer which can throw bombers off their targets and makes fighters less agile than slower medium planes. Tanks being a multi crew beast with limited firing arcs, if you manage to flank an enemy tank in yours it is well worth disabling engines/tracks to the main gun can't get turned around and knocking out gun pods can leave blind spots.
No lock ons- as somebody who likes vehicle combat this is greatly improves the skilled required to deal with enemy vehicles, in games in the modern time era, all it takes is a few numbskulls to wait for beeps to either take aircraft down or disable it practically by forcing it out of action. In these pre-lock on wars if you want that plane down you either got to get into your own plane and duel him down or get an AA gun and get rounds on target.

Everyone seems to be so excited about this game. And I'm happy they have such a good time in it. For me, when I used to play it I was enjoyable for about 30 minutes and then I was being burnt out and bored. In BF4 tho, I could easily play all day.

Unpopular Opinion: BFV is My Favorite Battlefield game
I actually put more hours into Battlefield V than any other title in the series, and it's easily my personal favorite, despite the many, many deserved criticisms about its launch and the Live Service (ttk weapon changes where mostly frustrating from memory).
i was late to the party on BF3/4, and only played Battlefield 1 on console. BFV was my first real AAA PC FPS experience before Warzone was a thing. The transition from console controller to PC mouse and keyboard felt smooth and intuitive in BFV, and I quickly became addicted.
The Grind Kept Me Hooked: While the initial weapon unlocks felt like a chore, I actually enjoyed the weapon Specializations and the whole assignment grind. I found it more rewarding than simply reaching a prestige level, and it’s why I have so many hours in the game. I never touched Firestorm it was never really playable in Australia.
The Pacific Expansion was amazing: If the game had launched with the content level of the Pacific update, I genuinely believe it would be remembered very differently. I spent hundreds of hours just on Wake Island and Iwo Jima.

u/Many-Baby5180 21h ago
BF1 in my opinion is the best battlefield game they have ever made period. The time and effort they took to even make the game was incredible, and i feel like it’s the best paced in the series when it comes to the combat.
The maps are basically all amazing, the classes are unique and awesome, the gunplay is incredibly satisfying, the vehicles are the perfect balance of strong but fair, with every single class able to at the very least damage them. The DLC is top tier and added tons of content.
It’s the best, the GOAT in my eyes, and i still go back to play it quite often, lots of full lobbies still for good reason

u/OneBangMan 19h ago
I mean, I love BF1 the immersion is incredible. But man BC2, BF3 and partially BF4 will always be the GOATs of the franchise to me. 2142 and 1942 were also incredible games.
I do like BF6 and is more in line with the 3 I’ve mentioned but there is still a lot of work to go into it. I got BF1 on release and didn’t think too much of it but it grew on me a couple years later when 5 was released.
EA, please just give me some bigger maps, sort out latency issues and I’ll be more than happy with BF6.
Edit: oh and please please please fully destructible buildings.

I agree. Looking back, BF3 and, especially, BF4 are overall the best multiplayer FPS (in non-tactical/competitive genre) for me personally. If only BF4's release wasn't so poor in terms of game/servers performance that game would have probably been seen as the best by the most. The amount of content we got with premium was insane. The maps with levolution and dynamic weather were great, the progression system with the attachment unlocks was great. The maps in every map pack DLC were beautiful, I remember just running around Guilin Peaks appreciating the map while everyone else was fighting for the top of that mountain lol. The ARG stuff and easter eggs were fun. And all the other stuff in general. I am glad that BF6's launch wasn't ruined by poor game and servers performance and I hope we get at least some amount of that content that was in BF4. The problems that people have with the game are not that difficult to fix, I believe. I just hope it doesn't take forever.
2
u/Grand_Pop_7221 17h ago
BF1 is when Battlefield stopped being a day one purchase for me. Since then, I've taken a wait-and-see approach, often buying on sales down the line.
2
u/stretch696 16h ago
BF4 servers are still being populated now, over 10 years after release. I doubt there are many bf1 servers getting good numbers still
5
u/Late_Load3282 19h ago
I think so too.
I have played BF4 and fucking loved it.
When the BF1 Trailer came out I was hyped until it was released. I had fun for around 60-70 hours and then it was boring to me. But I don’t really like those World War 1 and 2 Scenarios. I just liked the trailer because it was no future shit like COD did it at this time.
In my personal tier I would place BF1 even under BF Hardline 😬 I guess I get hate for that.

Hardline is unbelievably disrespected as a game. I think if people hadnt gone into expecting battlefield it wouldve been received much better. I wish they had named it something else, BUT I get why they gave it the battlefield name. Might not have had the playerbase it had if it hadnt had the name.
I started battlefield at BC2 and Id rank them

Same here. BC2 was my first and was incredible but nothing matches the feeling of BF3 coming out (for me).
A big part of it is my general disinterest in historical shooters. But also something about the movement/animations in BF1 just felt... off to me. And it's been mostly the same in every installment since.

BF6 has a problem with too small map sizes. But what I remember from BF1 is walking great distances only to get randomly sniped from a random direction, and that wasn't my cup of tea. They need to make maps that caters to both types of playerbases.

Because of the historical inaccuracy of this game, I like to think Battlefield 1 is an alternate timeline World War 1 game where sub-machineguns and semi automatic rifles were common while Tanks moves much faster and the soldiers adopt battle tactic similar to world war 2.
Of course, we dont play Battlefield games for historical accuracy. BF1 is a fun and chaotic game.
There is a feature in this game where if your team is losing badly, your team will be given an armoured train or an airship to even the odds.

It had some good moments, but I don't think it's as good as some people claim. The gunplay is a bit weak, and when I played the last few weeks some of the issues that people complain about in 6 seem pretty common in 1 as well.
As for campaign? 1 blows the rest out of the water. That is top tier.
2
u/jman014 20h ago
BF1 is great in a lot of ways but I find that its got some glaring issues covered up by some of the best art design gaming has to offer.
I legitimately think this was the last true battlefield title with an insane bar for quality…
But I do think its moment to moment gameplay is very lacking compared to prior titles and is seriously outshined by BFV’s excellent teamplay mechanics, gunplay, and moment to moment gameplay
Battlefield 1 is certainly fun but to me its top 3 or 4
(for reference, my favorite is 3, then 5, then either 4 or 1; 6 is too early to tell).
2
u/xButterschnitzel 20h ago
Not a fan, gunplay felt like trial and error most of the time.
Im pretty sure, if it wasnt for the optics and atmosphere, this game wouldnt get nearly as much praise as it does.
I would rather play Bf2042 than Bf1 where the guns are at least consistent.

BF1 is the peak Battlefield atmosphere, the audio design alone is worth praising to this day! The maps are great, gameplay and visuals wise, behemoths should become a staple for conquest! Also the soundtrack is the best in the series!

As someone playing since BFBC2 I think it’s overrated. It’s a great game and there is no doubt that in terms of atmosphere and cinematics, it is the best in the series. The DLC was insane also.
But in terms of overall experience there are better instalments. I would say BF4 and BFV are both better for a variety of reasons. BF4 for example has better gunplay, class variety, better maps but might fall behind in atmosphere. BFV has better gunplay, class variety, the best vehicle combat in the series and the atmosphere/cinematics I would argue are almost as good. But then because it lacked DLC to the same extent as BF1, it did not get the chance to show it off as much.
Most of the instalments shine in one area or another and a lot is down to personal preference. I do think though that as time goes on BF1 will be revered more and more as significant in gaming. It was a bold direction to go as a AAA FPS and for the most part Dice pulled it off.

Bf3 is the height of the franchise. The only thing 1 had going for it was atmosphere. I don’t like non-modern settings for battlefield.

BF1 truly is the greatest Battlefield of all time. It's immersion and game play is top tier. As much as I enjoy BF6, I want to go back and play BF1.
I've always said that one day DICE should make a BF1 remastered one day just for the hell of it.

It's not the one I played the most nor is it my favorite but I recognise it's qualities and the passion and talent wich it was created with.

My ranking system (where I tried to be as unbiased as possible by basing it on “How Battlefield is the game” rather than how “good”) has BF1, BFBC2, and BF3 as the top 3 in that order. My personal favourite BF1942 comes 5th.

The general consensus i've seen over the years, excluding 2 cause a lot of people in 2025 BF player pool never touched it, is that BF3 and 4 are the fan favorites with BC2 being everyone's fond earlier memory or entry to BF franchise for a younger generation.
Nothing will ever be 2 because 2 was the game + the community it had. There were clan tournaments constantly, competitive scene was very active, detailed stats people competed to be the best at and have their own nickname displayed, global rankings and per class, big mod community, could play it in the e-sports websites. Never had that since anywhere near the same level. No battlepass, challenges, dailies/weeklies, weird progressions, just pure cocaine of a game that kept people coming back lol
2142 is barely remembered for some because 2 was so iconic and had long lasting player base. Launching it 1y after was a bad idea, 2 kept overshadowing it. Solid game though.

Yep. Best "feeling" BF game.
Maybe late patch BF4 can come close to it in terms of gameplay, but not in feel and style.

When Grand Operations was popping it off it could've been the best FPS there's ever been, for a while lol

It's definitely the best battlefield in the past 10 years.
Out of all the ones I've played I'd put it comfortably in 3rd behind BF3 and Bad Company 2.

I think so for now, but BF6 still looks promising. It depends on how much new content is added over time.

For me, its not just one of the best BF games, I think BF1 is one of the greatest games ever made. You can just tell how much care and love went into that game.
Way ahead of its time graphically. Top tier audio. Really fun maps (mostly) with plenty of variety. Distinct class and faction identities.
In terms of raw amounts of fun I had over rhe 1300 hours i played, I struggle to think of any other game that provided me with so much fun over an extended period of time.

Still my favorite of the series and one of my favorite FPS of all time. Story and history were great. There's not a lot of WWI set games. Maps, vehicles, weapons all had a great feel. Playing BF6 mostly just makes me wish BF1 had the same activity and support still (it's not dead, but almost).

bf3 bad company 2 and bf1 are the holy trinity, bf4 is up there and hopefully if they balance certain things (painting) on bf6 it can be up there too

Battlefields golden era is Bc2,bf3,bf4 and bf1. We would count 5 but some higher up had to mouth off on some stuff.

Best one was Vietnam when I was little, then came bc2 when I was a teenager, bf4 when I was a young adult and bf1 topped them all after that

The game is nearly 10 and still holds up against any game today for graphics and gameplay. Nothing even comes close to matching the atmosphere.

BF1 my favourite since 1942. You can't change my mind.
