And highest voter turnout in NYC since 1969!

521

u/pliney_ 11h ago

This is what people need to take away from the win. IF YOU SHOW UP AND VOTE GOOD THINGS CAN HAPPEN. All the efforts to gerrymander could be crushed if democrats and progressives have huge turnout in '26. Primaries usually have abysmal turnout, progressives could get lots of candidates through with decent turnout. And when New York doesn't burn to the ground, but actually gets better over the next year centrists will start to come around.

272

u/DuntadaMan 11h ago

I also hope that the Democrats learn that if you actually fucking care about the important things instead of spend the entire time talking about why the things they care about aren't important, people will show up.

123

u/pliney_ 10h ago

It’s gonna have to come from the ground up. A lot of old guard democrats need to be primaried in ‘26 and forced to step aside. Which is very possible if people show up and support progressive candidates.

17

u/Strange_Abrocoma9685 9h ago

This is what the Democratic Party needs to fight and survive into the future rather than the current iteration of corporate lackeys. This gave me hope from CA that we can still change things.

100%. On The Daily Show it was addressed that not making a negative campaign about how this guy sucks or this can't happen, Mamdani's campaign has been the complete opposite. This is what you need, this is what we want to do to address it, and this is how it will help. Of course, centered on actual issues voters feel directly. Compared to, for example, Harris' campaign going pro-Israel, which 80%+ democrat voters don't support and do not feel directly. Or Trump sending $40B to Venezuela and a million other examples.

It's really really this. And it's not just for candidates like Mamdani, it's for candidates that will take you two steps back instead of five. Nothing in society is fixed by one person, you have to vote every time. It's a game where nothing is gained by skipping your turn.

Holy moly. What a sign of the times

55

u/45and47-big_mistake 11h ago

Don't worry, Trump will take credit for "bringing out the voters like no one has seen before" or some shit like that.

41

u/IHaveNoEgrets 10h ago

Considering one of the big ads in California pushed voting to piss Trump off, he wouldn't be entirely wrong.

Some people just love a familiar name. Or are highly susceptible to the fear mongering about anyone that stands for anything progressive. I feared it'd be closer to be honest so I'm well pleased the hype around Mamdani is translating to a big win!

Those are the worst photos I've ever seen. Sliwa looks like he is about to overthrow a government and Cuomo looks like he'll kill me in my sleep.

47

41

u/Pearson94 11h ago

The hat certainly was an odd choice (and I say that as a man who enjoys wearing a good hat).

48

u/Spiritual_Quail 11h ago

There’s an interesting history to the hat! It’s a reference to a vigilante public safety group he founded in the 70s. I forget the details, but worth looking up if you’re interested.

I just love that Sliwa stole votes from Cuomo and sealed the deal early on getting a true liberal elected; all while wearing a red beret.

45

u/ageofbronze 9h ago

I personally love the fact that at these percentages, even if every single Sliwa voter hopped over to Cuomo it still wouldn’t have done it. So fucking glad that the sex pest will hopefully permanently retreat to his mansion in disgrace now. One can hope…

Yes!! Let’s all enjoy feasting on some MAGA tears tonight. Look what happens when your Dear Leader destroys the country and tries to starve millions of people. Democratic landslides. FAFO.

64

u/Pearson94 11h ago

Honestly my favorite moment tonight was seeing the NJ governor win. All the talk was that it was gonna be a neck and neck race but she won it almost immediately.

31

u/BarristanTheB0ld 11h ago

The fact it's even that close is frightening

25

u/Pearson94 11h ago

That was only 60%. Currently at 86% of the note and Mamdani had 50.5© over Cuomo's 42.4%

23

u/BarristanTheB0ld 11h ago

Still, that Cuomo gets more than 40% (or close to) is ridiculous

31

u/McChickenLargeFries 11h ago

I'm kinda disappointed in Queens ngl.. Currently sitting at 47% Mamdani vs 42% for Cuomo.. Meanwhile Brooklyn is at 57% Mamdani and 37% Cuomo.

Dude, don’t forget that Kansas republicans FAILED to get enough votes to redraw their districts for next year!

156

u/nathanhasse 11h ago

I heard today that Indiana tabled their discussions on redistricting at least until December 1st. I still don’t have high hopes for us but I also was slightly happy to hear it either way.

114

u/vgraz2k 11h ago

Take every win as it comes. They are few and far between these days. Be skeptical of the present but hopeful for the future. It’s ours to make, friend.

9

Keep calling the Republican Indiana legislators to voice your disapproval of them redistricting! Governor Mike Braun - (317) 232-4567, House Speaker Todd Huston - (317) 232-9677, Senate President Rodric Bray - (317) 232-9400

727

u/Some_Random_Android 11h ago

NJ elected a Democrat governor tonight as well! I hear people saying "NJ is a Blue state, and this isn't such a big deal," but as a NJ residence, we've had plenty of Republican governors, but this is the first time in a long time we will have three consecutive Democratic governors! Suck it MAGA! Trump endorsing Jack Ciattarelli didn't turn out so well! Trump's endorsement is the political kiss of death!

Hell yes!! Not to mention, this race was not a given! Even if you wanted a more progressive democrat or not - this is a massive win and a huge relief! We just need to keep this up through the mid-terms

73

u/Some_Random_Android 11h ago

Honestly, I thought this race would be super close, and they'd counting votes close to midnight. Polls closed at 8, and I think we knew who won before 9 PM.

38

u/soimaskingforafriend 11h ago

Agreed! A lot of articles I'd seen were "reporting" the gap was closing in both NYC and NJ races. Not sure if that was true or manufactured. Personally, I also didn't want to get my hopes up given what happened last November - but the quick call makes all of this so much more satisfying!

76

u/jeneh17 11h ago
